Joan was my first cousin and a favorite niece of my Mom, Bertha van Eldik Downs. It was the determination of our Grandmother, Nellie, that kept her alive she was so tiny. My Mom said they put her in a shoebox, wrapped her in cotton batting, kept her near the oven, and fed her with an eyedropper. Mom said her head fit inside of a teacup and our Grandmothers wedding ring went over her hand. My Mom always loved her so much even if we didn't see her often. She grew up to be a lovely, delightful person. I love reading about her in this caring, loving obituary. I am sure she will be missed but it sounds like she gave many people years of warmth and love. May you all take comfort in her kindness and for all the good times you shared.
