Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Marvin Mills, son of Raymond and Marie (Wissink) Mills was born April 1, 1921 at Hospers, IA. He was baptized at the Hospers Reformed Church. As a boy, George attended the Philby Country School near Hospers. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to a farm near Holland, NE, only to return to Iowa when he was 18. He worked as a farm hand for Andrew Vander Maten, and considered their place his "second home". During this time, he made profession of his faith at the Middleburg Reformed Church. After three years of employment, George entered the military and served his country in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Vander Maten's, and worked there another three years. George was united in marriage to Emma W. Veen on October 12, 1949 at the First Reformed Church in Boyden, IA. Following their marriage they lived in Sheldon, IA for two years, later moving to farms near Sheldon and Sanborn, IA. In 1964, they moved to their farm near Hartley, IA where they lived until moving into the town of Hartley in 1991. George was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley where he participated in Brotherhood. He also served on the Church Consistory for three years, acting as president for one year. He was a member of the American Legion at Hartley, serving as its Commander for two years, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. George had been a director of Farm Bureau as well as an ASCS Committee member. Throughout his life, George found enjoyment in fishing, playing a round of golf, trying his luck at the casino, or afternoon card games with the guys at the Legion Hall. Watching his grandchildren's sporting events was always a highlight he treasured. He passed from this life on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the age of 93. Left to cherish his memory are his three children: one daughter, Mary, and her husband, Rick Britton of Peterson, IA; two sons: Greg, and his wife, Kristy Mills of Hartley, IA and Brian Mills of West Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren: Rachel (Peter) Thompson, Justin Britton, Matthew (Kelly) Mills, Kelsie (Wesley) Boyer, and Katelyn Mills; one great-grandchild, Emmalee Mikal; three brothers: Lambert, Ted, and Marvin Mills all of Lincoln, NE; three sisters: Elsie Wolfe of Elmwood, NE, Sylvia Roper of Lincoln, NE, and Louella Hall of Portland, OR; one half-brother, Ed Mills of Pensacola, FL; one half-sister, Ruth Carr of Cardiff, CA; other relatives and many friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Emma (2013); a stillborn daughter; grandson, Michael Britton; sister, Evelyn Bliek; and half-brother, Alvin Mills. <iframe id="tukios_player_512x330" allowfullscreen="true" allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="330" scrolling="no" src="https://www.tributeslides.com/videos/embedded_video/4YMNCY2GS24R7TK8" width="512"></iframe>
