Obituary of Charlotte Elizabeth Mercer

Please share a memory of Charlotte to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Charlotte Elizabeth “Char” Mercer was born December 8, 1945, in Sibley, Iowa. She was the daughter of John “Jack” and Agatha “Aggie” (Krogman) Epping. Char grew up in Sheldon, Iowa and received her education there.

On December 18, 1976, Char was united in marriage to Larry G. Mercer of Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in Leeds, Iowa for a time before moving to Sanborn, Iowa in 1981. Once they were settled in, Char found employment at Sanborn Foods in Sanborn, Foreign Candy Company in Hull, Iowa, and in later years, at Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon, Iowa.

Charlotte’s life revolved around her family and friends, and she cherished the time spent with them. She particularly enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports and engaging in outdoor activities such as camping, boating, and fishing. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her passion for tending to her flower garden and enjoying beach outings. Charlotte was also known for her baking skills, delighting her family with homemade goodies and ensuring her grandchildren ALWAYS knew where to find the candy drawer in her house - not to mention the well-stocked freezer where they could grab a popsicle in the summer. During the winter months, Char turned to crocheting, creating blankets, dishcloths and potholders for her loved ones.

Upon moving to Spirit Lake, Iowa, Char became involved with the American Legion and VFW through a good friend. She gladly shared her time and cooking skills to help support the various events sponsored by these groups. She also enjoyed attending their Wednesday dance nights, relishing the company of friends while taking in some good music.

Char’s life was defined by her love for her family and friends, a passion for the outdoors, and her culinary talents. She was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed assistance. Char will be remembered not only for her love of family and remarkable talents, but also for her warmth and kindness towards others.

On Thursday, March 21, 2024, Char was called home to join loved ones who had gone before: her husband, Larry Mercer; her parents, Jack and Aggie Epping; one brother, Ron Epping; one sister, Mary Smith; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Gach.

Keeping her memory close in heart are her children and their families: David and Michelle Mercer of Milford, Iowa, Russ and Janna Mercer of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Rodney and Allison Mercer, and Bradley and Sherry Mercer both of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Lora and Jim Gach of Cave City, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; other family members and a host of long-time friends.
