Obituary of Rosalie Phyllis Scholten

Please share a memory of Rosalie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rosalie Phyllis “Rose” Scholten, daughter of Vernon H. and Verna N. (Van Roekel) De Kock, was born in Sioux Center, Iowa on June 15, 1936. She spent her youth in the Sioux Center-Maurice, Iowa area, attending school in Sioux Center, and graduating from Sioux Center High School with the class of 1953.

On February 21, 1958, Rose was united in marriage to Robert Anthony “Bob” Scholten at Sioux Center. Their life together began on a farm near Melvin, Iowa where Bob raised livestock and grew row crops. The bulk of their married life was spent here and eventually four children would complete their family: Randal, Ronald, Ranae, and Rachelle.

Along with taking care of her family’s needs and keeping their home running smoothly, Rose was also employed in the healthcare field. Over the years she worked at the Sioux Center Hospital, Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa and Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon, Iowa. Her caring demeanor and gentle kindness were attributes she generously shared with others in need.

One of Bob’s favorite things to do was to go fishing – and Rose enjoyed it too! When the kids got old enough, they’d all grab a pole and head for the water for a fun time together. Reading, doing Word Search and jigsaw puzzles were some of Rose’s pastime activities; she also created some beautiful embroidery projects to share with family and friends. However, all of these things could be set aside if it meant spending some time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they were her pride and joy. Scattered across the U.S. - from Florida to Alaska - she traveled as often as she could to see them. Rose was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sanborn and had participated in various church activities.

On Sunday, February 4, 2024, Rose passed from this life at the age of 87 years. Preceding her were her husband, Bob (2016); her parents, Vernon and Verna De Kock; an infant brother; son-in-law, Charles Drews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Harriet Mouw.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Randal (Rhonda) Scholten of Sanborn, Iowa, Ronald (Kathleen) Scholten of Waverly, Iowa, Ranae Drews of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Rachelle (Christian) Davis of Navarre, Florida; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth (Joan) Scholten of Mitchell, South Dakota; other relatives and friends.
