Obituary of Sheril Ann Getting

Please share a memory of Sheril to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Sheril Ann Getting passed away on November 26, 2023, at the age of 93 years at Prairie View Nursing home in Sanborn, Iowa.

Sheril was born on November 14, 1930, to Orleen (Hinegardner) and Dunrith Waund at Primghar, Iowa. She was active in 4-H, which is where she met her future husband, Donald W. Getting. Sheril attended school in Primghar, Iowa and graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1949.

Sheril attended Iowa State University with her boyfriend, Don Getting. They had a Christmas wedding on December 23, 1950. During the Korean War, Don was drafted into the army. As newlyweds they were stationed in Oklahoma. Sheril and Don returned to farm in Sanborn, Iowa after his military service. Together they were blessed with three sons: Donald David, Dean William and David Lee.

Sheril was a long-standing member of the Sanborn Presbyterian Church. She was very active in the church including playing the piano for services, leading youth group and Sunday School, planning the annual Christmas play, and organizing the United Single Adults ministry. She also played the piano for a men’s group that sang at various churches.

Don, Sheril, Don Jr. and Mary Jo started Getting’s Garden in 1983 by planting one acre of strawberries. Sheril loved the strawberry business and helped with the advertising early on. During strawberry season, she was on the radio daily with updates on picking conditions, encouraging listeners to come pick berries. In time, her young granddaughter, Brittany, joined Sheril on the radio spot. Later, Sheril and two friends made homemade pies, jams and turnovers to sell at the Market.

Sheril joined the Board at Prairie View Home, taking her mother’s place. Sheril also worked at Prairie View starting in activities and later obtained her CNA certificate and worked as a CNA. Often she cared for people who were younger than her. She later returned to working every Saturday and Sunday with activities and lining up pastors for the church service. She loved working at Prairie View and made wonderful friendships. Sheril viewed all of her work at Prairie View as a ministry field. In addition, Sheril volunteered weekly at Treasure Chest in Sheldon and enjoyed the friendships she developed there.

Sheril loved gardening and all her flowers. Her garden was huge, and she gave away most of what she grew. Sheril also spent a lot of time in her greenhouse, starting plants for her garden and just enjoying her beautiful flowers.

Surviving her are three sons: Donald (Mary Jo) Getting of Sanborn;  Dean (Donita) Getting of Fort Dodge, IA and David (Ann) Getting of St Paul, MN; six grandchildren: Andy (Karissa) Getting, Brittany (Derek) Keizer, Taylor (Stephanie) Getting, Landon Getting, Joshua (Sarina) Getting and Zachary Getting; and ten great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Waund; and sisters-in-law: Emily Waund and Janice Charpentier.

Sheril was proceeded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 45 years, Donald W. Getting; brother, Bud Waund; sister-in-law, Joan Waund; brothers-in-law: Don Charpentier and Daryle Getting; and sister-in-law, Marion Getting.
