Doris Elaine Camp was born on April 14, 1926 at Elliott, Iowa to Elmer and Florence (Craig) Hallcock. She was baptized on April 21, 1946 in the First Christian Church in Spencer, Iowa. She received her early education at country schools near Elliott, Iowa, and later graduated with the class of 1945 in Everly, Iowa.
Doris lost her father at very young age, so while her mother found work in the lakes region, she lived with her sister, Pearl and her husband, Roy and also her brother, Elvin and his wife, Verlene. When she was 14, she was able to join her mother and stepdad, Riner Meyer of rural Everly.
While in high school, Doris met her future husband, Carlos Camp, and was engaged at age 16. She waited for him while he served his country in WWII, and upon his return, they were married on May 24, 1946 at the First Christian Church in Spencer. To this union two children were born: Douglas Clayton and Coreen Elaine. Doris was a stay-at-home mom and loved raising their children in a christian home. She played a leading roll in starting the Association for Retarded Children by providing education in the classroom and a workshop, now known as Sunshine Center and Group Home.
Carlos and Doris enjoyed ballroom dancing and camping. Doris’s hobbies included traveling, embroidering, painting ceramics, baking, tending to her flowers, shopping with Coreen and spoiling her granddaughters! She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary as well as a faithful, active member of the First Christian Church where she served in various capacities. Her faith carried her through many trials in the course of her life.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Carlos (1984); son, Douglas (2004); her mother and stepdad; siblings: Myrle Hamlin, Pearl Chrisman, Stella Inmann, Lester Hallcock, Elsie Zimmerman, Elvin Hallcock, Alma Fitzloff; and best friend, Molly Jane.
