Obituary of Lucille Pauline Quist

Please share a memory of Lucille to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lucille Pauline Quist, daughter of Harry and Eva (Hebbel) Peterson, was born December 3, 1921 in rural Hartley, Iowa. She spent her youth in the Hartley area along with her brothers and sister, and received her education at the local country school through the 8th grade.

Having grown up in the country, Lucille was accustomed to farm life, so when she married Richard Groen, it was a natural continuation of everything she loved best. She and Richard spent their entire married life together farming west of Hartley, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union: Rodney, Wayne, and Lynn.

Lucille’s days on the farm were kept busy with the usual food preparation, housework, and outside chores associated with agriculture. Keeping four hungry guys fed and all their jeans mended was no easy task either, but she did it joyfully and with quiet satisfaction. Every summer she planted and maintained a huge vegetable garden, which was not only rewarding in and of itself, but everything harvested from it tasted really good come December. Whenever Lucille was baking in the kitchen, everyone made sure they got to try whatever she pulled out of the oven…and there were never any complaints.

Lucille was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley for many years. She thoroughly enjoyed participating in the activities of the church as well as the fellowship she found there.

When Richard passed away in 1976, Lucille moved from the farm into the town of Hartley. Life as she had known it was very much changed, but she found a new purpose and companionship when she met Charles Quist. After their marriage, they lived on his farm until moving back to Hartley where they spent many happy years together. Due to health reasons, the couple moved to Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley. Charles passed from this life on August 11, 2015, and Lucille followed him on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the age of 96.

Preceding her in death were her husbands, Richard Groen, and Charles Quist; her parents, Harry and Eva Peterson; siblings: Eldon Peterson, Myron “Bud” Peterson, Roy “Dick” Peterson, Arlene Wescott, and Ethel Peterson in infancy.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Rod Groen of Phoenix, Arizona and his children – Melissa, Amy and Jeff Groen, Wayne Groen and his friend, Jackie, of Bozeman, Montana, and Lynn Groen of Pensacola, Florida and his children – Kaytie (Jeff) Fuller, and Jeremy (Jenny) Groen; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
