Obituary of Ruth Brandt

    Ruth Brandt, daughter of John and Jess (VanEs) Jacobs, was born December 28, 1924 near Alton, Iowa. She spent her youth on the farm near Alton, and attended the  Newkirk Consolidated School. Following high school graduation, Ruth furthered her education at Northwestern College at Orange City, Iowa, earning her teaching degree.

    On August 18, 1954, Ruth was united in marriage to Wilbur Jacob “Bill” Brandt at Compton, California. Eventually they returned to the Midwest, and would spend the bulk of their married life in northwest Iowa. Bill had come from a large family near Melvin, Iowa, and both Bill and Ruth enjoyed the company of his siblings and spouses, and all their Brandt nieces and nephews. They also looked forward to occasional visits to see all of Ruth’s brothers, sisters, and families scattered across the United States.

    When Ruth had some time to herself, she was usually tucked away in a quiet spot with her nose in a book. She loved to read! Crossword puzzles and Word Jumbles were another fascination and kept her mind razor sharp. The creative side of her came out sitting at the sewing machine. Ruth was a very meticulous seamstress, and also spent many hours working at craft projects.

    She and Bill were both Charter Members of the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. Sometime after Bill’s death in 2009, Ruth relocated to Sheldon, Iowa, taking up residence at the Christian Retirement Home in that town. She also became a member of the Calvary Baptist Church located there. Ruth passed from this life on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the age of 93 years.

    She is survived by her brothers: Ken, and his wife, Elaine Jacobs of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Don, and his wife, Alice Jacobs of Pottsborough, Texas; sisters: Judy, and her husband, Garry Engeltjes of Alleman, Iowa, and Mary Jasper of Ocala, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

    With her passing, Ruth is once again joined with her parents, John and Jess Jacobs; her husband, Bill Brandt; brothers: Howard Jacobs, and Davis Jacobs.
