Obituary of Norbert Nicholas Klein
Please share a memory of Norbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Norbert Nicholas Klein, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2018 surrounded by his family. The son of William B. and Clara (Hoffmann) Klein, he was born on January 26, 1935 on a farm southeast of Hospers, IA. Along with his brothers and sisters, he spent his childhood on the farm, attending school at St. Anthony's, and later received his GED.
From 1954 until 1956, Norbert served his country with the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he furthered his education at Northwest Iowa Tech College at Sheldon, IA, earning an Associate of Ag Business Degree.
On June 2, 1959, Norbert was united in marriage to Joan Catherine Stallmann at St. Anthony’s Church in Hospers, IA. They began their married life on a farm near Archer, IA. In 1971, the family moved to the farm near Sanborn, IA where they settled into the community and schools. Norbert enjoyed raising cattle, and took great care in planting and harvesting very straight rows of beans and corn. He and Joan farmed there together until his retirement in 2000, when they left the country and moved into the town of Sanborn. Norbert was frequently found on the golf course when he wasn’t playing pool or finding treasures for his wife’s garden. He loved to challenge his friends and family at a game of cards, and with a quick-witted comment, he would knowingly chuckle as he took the last trick. His off-hand comments gained him many-a-new friend, and his endless patience knew no bounds with his children, even more so with his grandkids whom he loved to tease.
Norbert believed in being an active member of his community. He served on several different committees at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, and was a Grand Knight and District Deputy in the Knights of Columbus for many years. He served on numerous boards of directors as well as the Cattleman’s Association. Norbert was also involved in his children’s lives as a 4-H leader and Fair Board member.
