Obituary of Wilbur Lee Bennett

Please share a memory of Wilbur to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Wilbur Lee “Bill” Bennett, son of Francis M. and Myrtle C. (Babcock) Bennett, was born March 18, 1943 in Sioux City, Iowa. He spent his youth in the Sioux City area, and also Firth, Nebraska, a small community near Lincoln, Nebraska.

In June of 1960, Bill served his country in the United States Navy, being discharged in March of 1962. On September 21, 1965, he was united in marriage to VaLoy Scheerhoorn at Sioux City. The couple made their home there until moving to Sibley, Iowa in 1967. While living in Sibley, Bill was employed at different times by AMPI, and Bosma Poulty, Inc., both of that town. He also worked as a welder at Sudenga Industries out of George, Iowa, and Demco Manufacturing in Boyden, Iowa. Following his retirement from Demco, Bill had more time to do the things he liked best – fishing and camping! Being outdoors in fresh air and sunshine was always a good thing. He appreciated what nature had to offer, and spent many hours tending flower beds, or feeding and watching the birds that showed up in his yard. He also enjoyed perusing through garage sales, looking for anything of interest, or new and unusual eagle pieces to add to his collection.

Throughout the years, Bill gave back to his community acting as a Boy Scout leader for the local club, and serving on the Sibley Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years. He was a member of the Sibley American Legion, George E. Mudge Post #324, and he also served as a Youth Group leader, helping with the church softball league.

On Thursday, May 10, 2018, Bill passed from this life at the age of 75. Preceding him in death were his wife, VaLoy; his parents, Francis and Myrtle; brothers: Donald, Leslie, George, and Neil; sisters: Dorothy Hartsock, and Mary Jane Brewer; father and mother-in-law, Wilbur and Leona Scheerhoorn.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Darren (Tammy) Bennett of Grayson, GA, and Darcee (Rodney) Kramer of Sibley, IA; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Robert “Bob” Bennett; sister, Patricia Reines; his endeared companion, Nancy Andera and her children: Lance (Barb) Andera, Matt Andera, Kate (Loren) Hansen, Becky Andera, Joe Andera, and Jeff (his fiancé, Catherine) Andera; Nancy’s fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
