Obituary of Perry Lane Taylor
Please share a memory of Perry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Perry Lane Taylor was born in Hartley, IA on January 4, 1961 to Gaylord and Joan (Hagedorn) Taylor of Primghar, IA. He was the first baby of the New Year, so he made his debut in the newspaper. Perry grew up, and attended primary school in Primghar until 8th grade, completing his education at Hartley Community School, graduating in 1979. Throughout those years, he played football, played drums in band, enjoyed mechanical work by fixing cars, raced cars, and worked on the family farm.
Following graduation, Perry enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country for eight years. During the first four, he spent much of his time aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. This carrier and its Strike Group had missions in the Indian Ocean during the Iran hostage crisis, and in the Mediterranean Sea during the Beirut, Lebanon crisis. He was recognized for designing and building a functional, mobile tadeye cleaner that was used onboard the aircraft carrier, as well as receiving a commendation for outstanding performance for his professional knowledge, hard work, and increased productivity during these years. After four years at sea, he continued his service in the Navy stationed at Oak Harbor, Washington. He worked as a mechanic during his tenure. He was, at heart, an avid mechanic, and he utilized his passion to work on race cars as well.
In 1987, after earning an honorable discharge, Perry remained in Oak Harbor, Washington, working as a mechanic for ten years, returning home to Hartley due to health issues. He enjoyed farming with his dad, trucking, tinkering on computers, and using his love of mechanics to fix various things from combines, trucks, tractors, to cars.
Perry marched to the beat of his own drum throughout his lifetime. His motto was, “Do it right the first time or don’t do it at all”. He may have taken longer when working on something, but he took pride in a job well done. His robust laugh and willingness to help others are key traits that everyone will continue to remember best. He will be missed by those who knew him well.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Joan Taylor of Hartley, IA; and his sister, Teresa DeBoer (Bret Dolphin) of Sioux Falls, SD; his nephew, John DeBoer of Rapid City, SD; his niece, Norah DeBoer of Sioux Falls, SD; and extended family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his father, Gaylord Taylor; his infant nephew, Ryan DeBoer; his paternal grandparents, Orville and Mearl Taylor; his maternal grandparents, Bill and Iola Hagedorn; and several aunts and uncles.
