Obituary of Reinhard Hibbing

Memorial Tribute

Reinhard Walter "Reiny" Hibbing was born to Emil and Martha (Ahlers) Hibbing at Hope, North Dakota, on August 7, 1925. In 1938, at age 13, he moved with his family to the Paullina, Iowa area where he attended country, parochial, and public schools, graduating from Paullina High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1946, having been granted a deferment until then to help on the family farm. He was honorably discharged in November of 1947, under the condition of serving in the reserves for three years.

On February 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Wilma Koester at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. His reserves commitment would have expired in November of that year, but instability in Korea led to his being called to Carson, Colorado in March of 1951, when their first child, Bill, was two months old.

When his military service ended, he returned to Gaza, Iowa where their family grew to include four children: Bill, Mary, Bob, and Dick. They continued farming, moving to farms near Dickens, Iowa in 1958, then near Everly, Iowa in 1963. In 1965, they purchased a farm near Hartley, Iowa, which became the homestead from which all of their children were launched into the world. In 1989, Reiny and Wilma left the farm and moved into Hartley where they resided until their deaths.

Reiny was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Wilma; his brother, Herbert; brother-in-law, Walter; and four sisters-in-law: Lucille Koester, JoAnne Koester, Wanda Hibbing and Lela Hibbing.

He is survived by his son, Bill and wife, Josie, and their children: Jonathan and Cheyenne, all of El Paso,Texas, David (Army Rangers), Daniel, James, Cherryenne, Cherrylenne, and Charlenne all of Hartley, Iowa; his daughter, Mary and husband, Rick Harvey of Norman, Oklahoma, and their children: Gabrielle of Marion, Iowa, Theresa of Norman, Oklahoma, Benjamin and wife, Amanda of Ankeny, Iowa, Christina and husband, Henry Doku of Yunnan, China, and Petrina and husband, Jerimiah Johnson of Edmond, Oklahoma; his son, Bob and wife, Patty of Decorah, Iowa, and their children: Tim and wife, Jessica of Ames, Iowa, Grace of Decorah, Iowa, Luke and wife, Melissa of Decorah, Iowa, Neva and husband, John Burdine of Ames, Iowa, and Paul and wife, Sarah of Knoxville, Tennessee; and his son, Dick and wife, Joleen of Webster City, Iowa, and their children: Janelle and husband, Ronald Miller of Austin, Texas, and Kyle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and his fiancé, Julia Hamof Osage, Iowa. Reiny is also survived by his brother, Arnie and wife, Jean of Paullina, Iowa; brother-in-law, Weber Koester and wife, Joan of Paullina, Iowa; sister-in-law, Wanabelle Koester of Omaha, Nebraska; and his beloved great-grandchildren: Blair, London, Colton, Quinn, and Crew (Tim and Jessica’s), Vrai (Neva and John’s), Wren (Luke and Melissa’s), Holden and unborn child (Paul and Sarah’s), Atalya, Kynsie, Schaeffer, Naeman (Ben and Amanda’s), Simeon, Eliana, Caleb, and Micaiah (Petrina and Jerimiah’s), and Juliana (Janelle and Ronald’s).

Reiny built his family, passing along his self-discipline and his devotion for God. His influence will long be treasured in the hearts of his descendants and those who knew him.
