Memorial Tribute
Reinhard Walter "Reiny" Hibbing was born to Emil and Martha (Ahlers) Hibbing at Hope, North Dakota, on August 7, 1925. In 1938, at age 13, he moved with his family to the Paullina, Iowa area where he attended country, parochial, and public schools, graduating from Paullina High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1946, having been granted a deferment until then to help on the family farm. He was honorably discharged in November of 1947, under the condition of serving in the reserves for three years.
On February 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Wilma Koester at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. His reserves commitment would have expired in November of that year, but instability in Korea led to his being called to Carson, Colorado in March of 1951, when their first child, Bill, was two months old.
When his military service ended, he returned to Gaza, Iowa where their family grew to include four children: Bill, Mary, Bob, and Dick. They continued farming, moving to farms near Dickens, Iowa in 1958, then near Everly, Iowa in 1963. In 1965, they purchased a farm near Hartley, Iowa, which became the homestead from which all of their children were launched into the world. In 1989, Reiny and Wilma left the farm and moved into Hartley where they resided until their deaths.
Reiny was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Wilma; his brother, Herbert; brother-in-law, Walter; and four sisters-in-law: Lucille Koester, JoAnne Koester, Wanda Hibbing and Lela Hibbing.
