Rich was raised in Corsica, South Dakota where he attended the rural Plainview School in Walnut Grove Township District and graduated from Corsica High School in 1961. After high school, Richard attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota and graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education.

Richard married Lyla Beth (Reinsma) on January 3, 1964 in Orange City, Iowa.
