Obituary of Carl Leo Peterson
Please share a memory of Carl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carl Leo Peterson, son of Nels and Florence (Kope) Peterson Biery, was born on December 13, 1932 in Rolfe, Iowa. In 1970, Carl moved to northwest Iowa to be closer to his mother who lived in Primghar, Iowa at the time. He was employed part-time by Lee Getting near Sanborn, Iowa for one year, and then became a long-time hired man for the Douma family, also at Sanborn. He began working for Oscar Douma, and then for all of Oscar’s sons at one time or another until his retirement in 2002. Carl considered the Doumas his family, and they treated him likewise. He was especially close to Rod and his wife, Linda. Rod spoke with him every night on the telephone - they had quite the conversations.
Carl was a very gentle man and never complained...he had a very unique character about him. He would gladly share his dinner to make someone else content. Carl enjoyed dogs, the company of young kids, old tractors, and country music. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes - especially on the Little Sioux River. He loved his home in Melvin, Iowa, and enjoyed getting around town on his scooter. Thanks to a very kind neighbor and friend, Helen Wimmer, he was able to remain in home despite his health issues. Helen watched over him for many years, making sure he was safe and cared for.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church at Melvin. His church family always took an interest in Carl's welfare, doing many special things for him. He thought a lot of his friend and minister, Reverend Al Honken.
On September 25, 2017, Carl became a resident at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, where he passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the age of 84 years.
He is survived by his step-sister, Betty Smith of Spirit Lake, Iowa. He thought the world of her and enjoyed their long visits on the telephone; other friends and acquaintances.
