Obituary of June Van Dyke

Please share a memory of June to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

June (Elgersma) Van Dyke was born on August 9, 1929, north of Sanborn, Iowa. She would join eight older siblings in the  Harry and Hattie Elgersma family. June grew up around Sanborn, attending the Christian School and Center Township #3 Rural School. After graduating from 8th grade, she began working in people’s homes, and then in the Hartley Creamery at Hartley, Iowa. In November of 1946, June took a ride with John Van Dyke - a ride that would last over 45 years.
On February 25, 1949, June married John Van Dyke. They began their married life farming north of Hartley. While living there, five children were born: Larry, Karen, Tom, Terry and Joy. After moving to the town of Sanborn, Janie was added.
June worked as a janitor in the Public Library and the Sanborn City offices, an Avon Lady, and as a laundry lady at Prairie View for 14 years. She enjoyed sewing, making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and Sock Monkeys for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also crocheted many blankets. Best known for her homemade bread, “June” cookies, and almond pastries, June baked until she left her home to enter Prairie View in 2014.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Hattie Elgersma; her sisters: Josie Van Den Berg, Jennie Vanden Berg, Effie Starkenburg, Tena Elgersma, and Margaret Veltman; brothers: Bill Elgersma, Jake Elgersma, Sam Elgersma, and John Elgersma; an infant brother and sister; her husband, John Van Dyke; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Van Dyke; granddaughters: Amanda Van Dyke and Jessica Loomans; and a great-grandson, Craig Van Dyke.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Larry and Brenda Van Dyke of Sioux Center, Iowa, Karen and Lonnie Van Meeteren of Sheldon, Iowa, Tom and Helen Van Dyke of Sheldon, Iowa, Terry Van Dyke of Sanborn, Iowa, Joy and Rob Bock of Allen, Nebraska, and Janie Van Dyke of Orange City, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond and Phyllis Elgersma; sister-in law, Bev Elgersma all of Sanborn, Iowa; brother-in law, George Veltman of California; sister-in-law, Bertha Vander Plaats; and many nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as her dog, Mininie, who always visited her in the nursing home.
