Obituary of Lester Lawrence Tewes

Please share a memory of Lester to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lester Lawrence Tewes, son of Ernest and Nellie (Baumeister) Tewes, was born on September 22, 1926 in rural Hartley, IA. He spent his youth in the Hartley area, helping his family on the farm and attending the local country school.

On September 24, 1950, Lester was united in marriage to Dorothy Eva Diekmann. They began their life together on a farm east of Hartley, where they lived the bulk of their entire married life, and raised their four children: Glenda, Karen, Kevin and Jerry.

Having grown up in the country, Lester learned at an early age about the trials and successes associated with agriculture. Being one of the older boys, he worked side by side with his Dad, taking on the farming responsibilities that come with each season. Anything you work that long at, and give that much of yourself to, you come to love, and Lester did. Being a steward of the land was his passion. He just enjoyed being outdoors, and that included hunting and fishing. Woodworking and mechanics also gave him hours of pleasure. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley.

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, Lester passed from this life at the age of 90. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ernest and Nellie Tewes; his beloved wife, Dorothy in 2010; one son, Jerry in 2015; five brothers: Harlan, Marvin, Delmar, Lawrence, and Arlo; four sisters: Mildred, Arlene, Marilyn, and Norma Jean.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Glenda Tewes of Hartley, IA, Karen (Phil) Scott of Aurora, CO, Kevin (Jean) Tewes of Hartley, IA, and daughter-in-law, Sheri Tewes also of Hartley, IA; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers: Orville Tewes of Paullina, IA, Roger Tewes of Larrabee, IA, and Eldon Tewes of Hartley, IA; two sisters: Marjorie Petersen and Marlene Wills both of Hartley, IA; many other relatives and friends.
