Benhardt “Ben” Hugo Hennings was born on March 27, 1916 on a farm in Grant Township near Hartley, IA; the son of Adolf and Rega (Schade) Hennings. He spent his childhood in the Moneta area; he received his education through tenth grade at Moneta, IA. Following his school years, Ben served his country in the United States Army during World War II from July, 1942 until October, 1945, serving in Rhineland, Central Europe. On August 22, 1942, Ben married Chandos Renee Schroder at Little Rock, Arkansas Army Base Chapel. During his years of living in Hartley, he worked for Rudy Hoper’s Blacksmith Shop, Ketelson’s Hardware, and Burns’ Chevrolet. Later he bought and operated the Standard Gas Station (located where Kunkle Tire now operates) from 1961 until his retirement in 1981. He also owned Hennings Radiator Repair shop. Following his retirement he continued to work with his son at Hartley Farm & Home and the Henning’s Christmas Tree farm.. Ben passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at the Primghar Care Center. Left to cherish his memory are his son: Dave Hennings and his wife, Cindy, of Hartley, IA; and a granddaughter: Pam Hennings; special friend Jean Rohlf of Hartley, IA; other relatives and many friends. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers: Rudy, Harry, Emil, Ted and Elmer and their wives; three sisters: Viola, Caroline and Lillian and their husbands. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hartley, the Masonic Lodge and the Aurthur W. Kirchoff Post 288 of Hartley, IA. Ben was an avid fisherman, loved to garden and do mechanical repair work, but most of all he loved working with his son at Hartley Farm & Home.
