Obituary of Margaret Hickey

Margaret Lorraine (Hakeman) Hickey was born on April 17, 1907 in Sanborn, IA; the daughter of Clare and Edna (Snieder) Hakeman. She spent her childhood years in Sanborn, and attended the public school there. She later graduated from the Iowa State Teacher’s College, and taught school for a few years. In 1931, Margaret married Lawrence Hickey. The couple farmed and raised their family on a farm north of Sanborn. In 1958, they built a home in Sanborn and moved to town. Lawrence passed away in 1984. Margaret moved to Jackson, MN in 1990, where she lived until she entered an assisted living facility in Spirit Lake, IA. As her health deteriorated, she returned to Sanborn, and became a resident at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Ironically, Lawrence was a member of the original board of directors for Prairie View when it was first being built. Margaret passed away there on Friday, August 18, 2006 at the age of 99. Always an active person, Margaret enjoyed puzzles, watching birds, knitting and crocheting afghans, and reading. She was a fan of Minnesota Twins baseball. She was still making trips to Jackpot Junction at the age of 97. Survivors include her daughters: Jean and her husband, George Benda of Alpha, MN, and Virginia and her husband, John Termeer of Montgomery, TX; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Wilma Hakeman of Phoenix, AZ; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Tom Hickey, one sister, Dorothy, and three brothers: Cornyle, George and James.
