Please share a memory of Irma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irma Ahrens was born in Germany on February 28, 1920; the daughter of William and Johanna Meinen Lammers. She came to America with her family at the age of two. Her father was very proud to be an American, and insisted that his family speak English. Her childhood years were then spent in Akron, IA, and she graduated from Akron High School. Irma was united in marriage to Ralph Ahrens on December 22, 1938. The couple spent most of their married life farming together near Hartley, IA. They were blessed with two children: Sandra and Rodney. Irma and Ralph traveled extensively; they took cruises, visited throughout the United States, and made several trips to Hawaii. They spent 28 warm winters at their second home in Arizona. Ralph passed away on September 18, 1991. Irma then moved into the town of Hartley, and eventually into the Community Memorial Health Center, where she passed away on June 25th. Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Bruce of Herndon, VA; her son, Rodney Ahrens of Hartley, IA; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a brother, Walter Lammers; other relatives and friends. Irma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; her brother, Bill Lammers; and her sister, Marion Hofer. Irma loved being outdoors, always raising a large garden and helping with farm chores. She was an avid fishermen; enjoyed dancing and playing cards-especially Minnesota Buck. She found great joy in making candy for the holidays and graciously gave most of it away. She put her artistic abilities to use making quilts, silversmithing and designing jewelry, and restoring antique dolls. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley.
