Obituary of De Young

Memorial Tribute Dr. James Calvin De Young, son of James H. and Margaret (Japinga) De Young, was born on August 13, 1931, in Archer, IA. He spent his youth in the Archer, Sanborn, and Primghar areas; attending country school, then Sanborn Christian School; graduating from Hull Western Christian High School in 1948. Jim furthered his education at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA; Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI; Westminster Seminary in Glenside, PA; and the Free University of Amsterdam, where he earned his doctorate in theology. Following his studies, Jim was founding pastor of Prairie Lane Christian Reformed Church in Omaha, NE. Much of his career was dedicated to teaching, as dean and professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS, as well as Asian Theological Seminary in Manila, the Philippines. He also served as interim pastor for the Christian Reformed Church in Conrad, MT. Jim was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church and was very involved in Christian Reformed World Missions efforts. His knowledge and experience were a valuable asset in forwarding various projects within that organization. On a more relaxing level, Jim loved being outdoors and found great pleasure in the simple joys of gardening. He was also very talented when it came to woodworking and shared many of his creations with his family and friends. A "loftier" interest he had was flying airplanes. Jim used his aviation skills and expertise while flying for the Mississippi Civil Air Patrol. He passed from this life on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the age of 84. Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Margaret De Young; and two sisters, Irene De Kok and Wilma Southerland. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Ann of Sanborn, IA; six children: Patricia of Toronto, ON., James of Minneapolis, MN, Mary Lou of Bryson City, NC, Cheryl Lynn of Burbank, CA, Robert and Daniel, both of Clinton, MS; their spouses; 19 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Memorials given in Jim's name will be directed to Christian Reformed World Missions and Asian Theological Seminary.
