Memorial Tribute
Joyce Mae (Peters) Jenkins, the daughter of Emil and Stella (Gosch) Peters, was born April 24, 1922 in Hartley, Iowa. She spent her youth in Hartley and attended country school there, graduating from Hartley High School in 1940. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley.
In 1942, Joyce, along with high school friends, moved to California where they worked at North American Aviation. On May 20, 1943, she was united in marriage to Warren Jenkins who was serving in the United States Army Air Force at the time. After his honorable discharge in 1946, the couple returned to Hartley where they made their home and raised their three children.
Along with caring for her family, Joyce was employed at the Hartley Memorial Hospital as a Nurse's Aid, and also the Mann Nursing Wing from 1965 until her retirement in 1995. She had been an active member of the Association for Retarded Children for several years. In her spare time, Joyce kept busy with crocheting, cooking and writing short stories. She dearly enjoyed her family and visiting with friends.
