Obituary of Leona Scheerhoorn

Memorial Tribute Leona Rebecca Martha Scheerhoorn, daughter of Albert and Martha (Schlossin) Techen, was born March 9, 1921 in Sioux County, IA. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Hull, IA, and attended school in the Hull area. On May 28, 1944, Leona was united in marriage to Wilbur Scheerhoorn at Worthington, MN. They were blessed with three children: VaLoy, Valerie, and Verlyn. Throughout their married life, the couple farmed near George, IA, Melvin, IA, and Sanborn, IA, eventually moving into the town of Sanborn in 1972. Wilbur passed away on September 7, 1987. Leona continued living in Sanborn and working in the Dietary Department at the Prairie View Retirement Campus in Sanborn where she had been employed for 20 years. Leona loved to be outside tending her garden and flower beds - always paying special attention to the roses. At quieter times, she enjoyed reading a good book. However, her greatest delight came from spending quality time with her family, which was truly her pride and joy. Leona passed from this life at her home on Monday, October 5, 2015 at the age of 94. Preceding her in death were her parents, Albert and Martha Techen; her husband, Wilbur; her daughter, VaLoy; three sisters; Elsie Miller, Ellen Miller, and Arvilla Breuer; one brother, Arlie Techen. Left to cherish her memory are her two children and their spouses: Valerie, and her husband, Francis Weston of Charleston, SC, and Verlyn, and his wife, Sheryl Scheerhoorn of Sanborn, IA; son-in-law, Wilbur Bennett of Sibley, IA; four grandchildren: Darren (Tammy) Bennett of Grayson, GA, Darcee (Rodney) Kramer of Sibley, IA, Jillian (Justin) Wiese of Norfolk, NE, and Tallie (Mark) Nelson of Cheyenne, WY; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
