Obituary of Vivian Strayer

Memorial Tribute Vivian Elaine Strayer, daughter of Donald and Hazel (Bolks) DeBoer, was born at Hull, IA on August 25, 1932. She and her two sisters grew up on a farm near Hull where her parents owned and operated a dairy. As a young girl, Vivian would deliver milk to the residents of Hull before going to school. She received her education in Hull, graduating with the class of 1950. That summer, Vivian was employed as a switchboard operator for the town of Hull; a perfect job for someone with a sharp memory! People remembered how quickly she could recall names and numbers. She then worked as a waitress at Perkin's Corner near Hull for several years before finding employment with Wolff's Department Store in Sheldon, IA. While working at Wolff's she met Howard "Jim" James Strayer. They were married on February 24, 1967 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, IA. In 1970, they moved to Boise, ID where Vivian worked at a department store in shipping and receiving. She and Jim owned and operated Strayer's Hardware in Sanborn, IA when they moved there in 1976. Wanting to be closer to family, they relocated to Colorado Springs, CO in 1984. While living there, Vivian operated a housecleaning service. In 1990, they moved back to Sanborn; Jim was employed as an over-the-road truck driver, and Vivian would often join him for the trip. She thoroughly enjoyed spending those times with Jim in the truck; being able to stop and visit children, grandchildren, other family and friends, working her Word-Find puzzles or reading a good book. Vivian was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Sanborn. She passed from this life at her home on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at the age of 82. She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Hazel DeBoer; and an infant daughter, Vicki. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Jim of Sanborn, IA; her children: Belinda McEntee of Colorado Springs, CO, Tony Vink of Caldwell, ID and John Vink of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren: Adam Lowry, Jarod Lowry both from MN, Tony R. Vink from NV, Tamara Elvira from WA, Chad Vink from CO; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters: Sharon (Shorty) Hubers of San Diego, CA, Kathy (Michael) Dudding of Denison, IA; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
