Memorial Tribute
Ida Dorothy Bracker was born October 22, 1921 to Karl Haertner and Augusta (Graves) McDougall Haertner in their rural home near Ocheyedan, IA. She attended country school through the eighth grade and one year of high school at Ocheyedan. After her father died, Ida chose to stay home and care for her mother.
In December 1942, Ida’s boyfriend, Harold Bracker, was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Seattle, WA. Ida moved to Seattle soon after, working as a welder in a shipyard there. On October 10, 1943, Harold and Ida were united in marriage at Seattle, WA. Following Harold’s military discharge, the couple moved back to Iowa, and were engaged in farming north of Melvin where they raised their four sons; Larry, David, Steve and Neil. In 1991, they retired from farming and moved into the town of Melvin.
Ida was an active member of the American Lutheran Church of Melvin, IA where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Women's Circle, and participated in a quilting group. Ida was also a member of the Melvin American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed visiting friends in the nursing home.
