Obituary of Moris Gonnerman

Please share a memory of Moris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Moris Nelson Gonnerman and his twin sister, Doris, were born February 12, 1921 to William and Ann (Nelson) Gonnerman at Hartley, Iowa. He grew up on the farm northwest of Hartley and attended the local country school. Later, he graduated from Hartley High School. On November 17, 1942, Moris married his long-time sweetheart and neighbor, Leah A. Frick. Moris and his father-in-law, Arnold Frick, purchased the Frick homestead where Leah had been born. After this purchase, they moved across the section from the Gonnerman homestead. Moris and Leah made this their home for many years. In time, their family increased with the birth of a son, Thomas Arnold, and a daughter, Susan Jane. Moris loved the land and his animals. He raised and milked Milking Shorthorns his entire farming career. He began 4-H with his children and became a 4-H Leader for many years. Moris loved the time spent with kids and helping them with projects. Advancing from the 4-H shows, he began showing his cattle at the Clay County Fair. It was a family affair that grew to include the grandchildren as well. He loved going to the fair and visiting with all his fellow showmen. Moris continued this tradition for over 50 years, and now has passed it on to his son and grandson. Moris was active in the Trinity United Church of Christ. He was on the Building Committee when the church was built, and was a member of the Brotherhood. He took great pride preparing the meat for the Brotherhood suppers for many years. He was also a charter member of the Lions Club in Hartley. You could always find him mixing pancake batter for their annual breakfast. Moris found satisfaction in keeping busy and had a great passion for helping others. After he and Leah moved into Hartley he would help the neighbors by mowing lawns or handling small repairs. He helped out at Fiesta Foods grocery store, and was always there early to help unload trucks and stock shelves. He enjoyed just spending time with his family; especially loved the time with the kids. In December, 2010, Leah moved to assisted living at Hartley, and Moris, to the nursing home. He made many friends there and, once again, was always ready to help out with anything. On December 25, 2013, Leah went to heaven to set up housekeeping for Moris who would soon join her. On December 17, 2014, Moris took that final step. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Tom (Betty) Gonnerman of Sheldon, IA, and daughter, Susan (Mark) Guggisberg of Hartley, IA; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Nagel; and sister-in-law, June Gonnerman, both of Hartley, IA. Preceding him in death were his parents and siblings; and granddaughter, Shelley Gonnerman.
