Obituary of Betty Meyer
Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betty Alice Meyer, daughter of Howard and Ione (Hughes) Roetman was born December 30, 1927 at Lake Park, IA. She lived her youth in the area and attended school there. Following graduation from Lake Park High School, Betty attended the Methodist School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. After four years of training, she received her R.N. Degree.
On May 20, 1950, Betty was united in marriage to Cletes Clarence Meyer at the Lake Park Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Spencer, IA, then moved to Webb, IA, and finally settled on a farm in the Hartley, IA area where they raised their three children: Cindy, Stan, and Russ.
Betty used her nursing skills her entire adult life, beginning at the Hand Hospital. She later worked at the Spirit Lake and Spencer hospitals, finishing out her medical career at the Hartley Hospital until her retirement.
Betty was an active member of the Hartley United Methodist Church. She belonged to the United Methodist Women's Group, Miriam Circle, and was secretary of the Church Council. Even when she was nursing, she found time for gardening; canning the produce for her family to enjoy. While the vegetables were good to eat, flower gardening was her passion. She loved to see and care for the marvelous creations blooming in her backyard. When the season moved her back indoors, quilting, reading or Aquasize class filled her day. She also enjoyed watching all sporting events; particularly Iowa Hawkeye basketball. No matter what she was doing, Betty's favorite time was spent with her family; especially her grandchildren. She peacefully passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the age of 86 years.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Cletes; her children and their spouses: Cynthia (David) Hennings, Stanley (Julia) Meyer, and Russell (Darla) Meyer all of Hartley; 5 grandchildren; one sister, June Lockey of Milford, IA ; other relatives and many friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her sister, Bonnie Raynor; brothers: Everett, John and Richard Roetman; brother-in-law, Gordon Lockey; and sister-in-law, Lynn Roetman.
