Letting Go - Hanging On Arlene Walker was a writing mentor, encourager, big sister, and fervent prayer warrior. At a writer's conference in 2006, I heard her laugh as she sat at the registration table. It wasn't until two years later that we actually met, but her energetic laugh made me think she was someone worth knowing. She was! Arlene had dreams to fulfill, poems to write, loved ones to pray for, devotionals to write, bulletin board ideas to send, Haiti stories to finish, family photos to scan, or cookies to bake and have on hand in the freezer. She was too busy with life to think much about death. That may be part of the reason it's hard to let go. She didn't give us much of a chance to prepare for her passing. Something tells me, though, she wouldn't have asked God for any other way. That makes it only a little easier to let go. How I already miss our no less than an hour- long phone visits, the fifteen-minute good-bye at the end of the conversation, and her laugh! As I let go of my selfish wish for her to still be here with us, I'm hanging on to those many precious memories we shared. And I'm so thankful to have found in her a faithful friend.
