Obituary of Orlan Lux

Orlan was born on May 9, 1942 to Edith and Harold Lux of Hartley. He attended Hartley School and graduated in 1960. Following high school, Orlan attended Reisch Auctioneering School in Mason City, Iowa and graduated in December of 1960. Orlan was an auctioneer for area household, antique, machinery and land auctions for over 52 years. He began farming in 1957 and farmed along Highway 18 just outside of Hartley until today. Around Hartley, you may have seen Orlan as a member of the HMS Football "Chain Gang" from 1960 - 2012. In November, 2007, Orlan was asked to run the chain at the Iowa Class 1A and 2A Football State Championships. In addition to the local presence Orlan had, he also was well known in the Arabian Horse business from 1963 thru 1989, during which time he was both auctioneer and ring man for some of the most prestigious Arabian auctions in the country. In 1975, Orlan was asked by Mike Nichols, director of Broadway and Hollywood movies, to be the personal escort for Jackie Onassis for a 3-day Arabian sale. While working other Arabian Horse sales, he also met and became friends with Wayne Newton. Orlan's other notable contributions to the Hartley community and local area include participation on the Iowa State Simmental Cattle Association throught the 70's, the Hartley Public Library Board while the new library was being built, and the Northwest Iowa Economic Development Board from 1985 - 1991. In his spare time on the farm, Orlan enjoyed breeding and raising Angus show cattle. He will be missed in the community he loved so much. Orlan married Therese McCarty in February, 1968 in Hartley. Together, they have four children: Jennifer ( Mike) Hidding and their daughters, Paige and Tara all of Chanhassen, MN, Jo (Jeff) Little and their sons Jack and Jared all of Montezuma, IA, Matthew Lux (fiancé, Kim Potter) of San Diego, CA and Morgan Lux of Marshall, MN. He is survived by his brother, Norman (Myrna) Lux of Hartley. He was preceded in death by his parents. In Celebration of Life Orlan D.
