Joan Joyce Van Rooyen, the daughter of John G. and Effie (Swets) Van Oort, was born at Orange City, IA on May 18, 1929. She lived her youth around the Orange City area where she attended country school, and later graduated from Newkirk High School. She continued her education at Northwestern College for one year. On August 3, 1950, Joan was united in marriage to Harvey Gerald Van Rooyen at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. To this union, six children were born; Elaine, LuAnne, Bud, Janna, Rachel and Butch. The couple moved to Denver, CO in 1963 where Harvey worked as an industrial engineer manager for several years. In 1988, they moved back to Iowa, eventually settling in Sheldon, IA in 2007. Harvey passed away on August 8, 2005, and Joan continued to live in Sheldon until her passing on May 5, 2013 at the age of 83. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sanborn, IA for many years and was involved with the Gideons Society. She loved to travel with her family to whom she was dearly devoted. Left to cherish her memory are her children: LuAnne (Carl) Mulder of North Mankato, MN, Clair “Bud” (Lori) Van Rooyen of Spring, TX, Janna Van Rooyen of Plain- view, MN, Rachel (Bill) Reuter of Melvin, IA, and Mark “Butch” (Vicki) Van Rooyen of Fromberg, MT; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Norma (Russ) Kenney and June Van Oort both of Orange City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey; daughter, Elaine Werlinger; and two infant brothers. In Celebration of Life Joan J.
