Born Pauline Alice Vande Berg July 21, 1933 in Hull, Iowa to Marie Johanna (Schuette) and John W. Vande Berg, Paula attended and graduated from Hull High School in 1950. Her alma maters were Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) and Buena Vista University. While teaching at Sibley Public School, she met her future husband Merle L. Dopp. They were married December 29, 1954.
Those who knew her best will recall Paula’s varied interests. These included birds and other wildlife, rescuing and restoring antiques, genealogy, sewing, reading, bridge, and the fine art of conversation often accompanied by delicious foods and beverages. For holidays and every day, she was the “hostess with the mostest,” entertaining friends and family frequently and often with unique treats such as sodusberries. Throughout her life, Paula lent her energies to her community and church. Commitments included involvement with the Iowa Agency on Aging, P.E.O., various church libraries, Order of Eastern Star, and membership at Calvary United Methodist Church, Arnolds Park, Iowa.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Merle, of 58 years, Paula is survived by her son John Lambert Dopp, of Lake Park, Iowa; daughters Susan Dopp and her husband Michael Martin, of Enderlin, ND and Mary and her husband Merle Mack, of Pewaukee, WI; and granddaughter Elyse Marguerite Jewel Mack, New York City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Aunts Kathleen Vande Berg VanMuyden and Agnes Vande Berg Koerselman, and special friends Elizabeth Bryan Forbes and Edward and Nannie Reimann.
