Obituary of Effie Green

Effie (Korthals) Green, the daughter of Leonard and Lubbertha “Bertha” (Evink) Korthals was born on April 11, 1920, in Boyden, IA. She spent her entire youth in this area, and completed her education at the Sheridan Township Country School in Sioux County. She was united in marriage to Richard Green on January 8, 1940 at the Reformed Church of Matlock. To this union one son, Gary Richard, was born. Effie was a devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed working with crafts, playing her piano and organ, and “speeding” around on the lawnmower. She always had cake and coffee to share with anyone who would stop by, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. They always looked forward to Grandma’s taverns and chocolate cake. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Boyden. Effie’s life reflects many blessings, among them, the fact she was born, raised, and spent her entire married life – 80 years total - all on the same section of ground just north of Boyden. Eventually, she moved to a retirement home in Sheldon, IA. She passed from this life on December 15, 2012 at the Milford Nursing Care facility in Milford, IA at the age of 92 years. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Gary (Elaine) Green of Milford, IA; three grandsons: Dan (Dawn) Green of Farmington, MN, Darin (Julie) Green of Boyden, IA and Dave (Sharee) Green of Milford, IA; four great-grandchildren: Amber (Jason) Christensen of Arnolds Park, IA, Dillon Green of Boyden, IA, Kendal Green and Kylan Green both of Milford, IA; one great-great-granddaughter, Logan Christensen of Arnolds Park, IA; one brother, Gerrit Korthals of Boyden; three sisters: Frances Freerks, Cornelia Van Westen and Kathryn Krull all of George, IA; one sister-in-law, Lillian Green of Boyden; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Effie was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Richard; her parents; two brothers, Henry and Lawrence Korthlas; her in-laws; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; two nephews and one niece.
