Obituary of Cornelia Douma

Cornelia (Veen) Douma, the daughter of Cornelius and Johanna (Rensink) Veen was born on January 5, 1922 on a farm near Sheldon, IA. She spent her early years in the Boyden, IA area and attended country school there. On September 10, 1941, Cornelia was united in marriage to Oscar Douma at her parent’s home. The couple were blessed with three sons: Bradley, Rodney and Robert. Together the couple were engaged in farming together for 15 years on the Douma family farm south of Sheldon. They then moved to a farm northwest of Sanborn where they lived for 16 years until retiring in 1972 and moved to Sanborn. Oscar passed away September of 1977. Cornelia continued to live in Sanborn until moving to the Prairie View Nursing Home on May 13, 2009, and she passed away there on August 24, 2012 at the age of 90. Cornelia was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sanborn where she served on the Women’s Guild; she was also part of the Sanborn Welcome Wagon in her earlier years. She loved to crochet aphgans for all of her family members. For several years she was a correspondent for the Sanborn Pioneer Newspaper. Cornelia was well known for her baking talent, especially her treats for each family member’s birthday. She loved to play cards, she took pride in her clean house and would not tolerate dirty window even at the nursing home. She is survived by her three sons: Bradley (Delores) Douma, Rodney (Linda) Douma and Robert (Marcia) Douma all of Sanborn, IA; grandchildren: Deanna (Greg) Etherington, and their children: Sean and Rachel, Amy Douma (Dave Sawchuk), Debra Douma – Herren (Tighe) and their children: Bradyn and Landyn, Angela (Brad) Kamradt, and their children: Payton and Travis, Ross (Shawn) Douma, and their children: Dustin, Erika and Caleb, Kent (Heidi) Douma, and their children: Keegan, Addi and Kolby, Nathan (Leah) Douma, Adam (Jennifer) Douma, and their children: Abigail, Caden and Brady; sister: Emma (George) Mills of Hartley, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Cornelia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter: Dawn Marie Douma; brothers: Dick, Cornelius, Gerrit John, and Herbert; sisters: Albertha, Janetta, Catherine, and Katherine Johanna.
