Anthony J. “Spike” Van Zee, the son of John and Tillie (Bartman) Van Zee, was born on August 27, 1918, in Boyden, IA. The family later moved to the Everly and Sanborn, IA areas.
On April 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Vivian Te Grotenhuis of Newkirk, IA. They spent most of their married life in the Hospers, IA, area where they raised their three children, Dennis, Linda and Beverly. During his working years, Spike was engaged in farming and later drove truck. He enjoyed woodworking, and crafted rocking chairs and other knick knacks. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers.
He passed away at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, on August 21, 2012, at the age of 93. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Vivian, on August 18, 2004, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, 4 step-brothers and 2 step-sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are his children and their families: Dennis and his wife, Carrie of Sioux Falls, SD, Linda and her husband, Jim Stanley of Wilmington, NC, and Beverly and her husband, Arlin of Paris, TX; 8 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
