Please share a memory of Elmer to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Elmer William Nagel, the son of Esther (Kraft) and Pete Nagel, was born on February 27, 1941, in Hartley, Iowa. He was baptized on Aug. 3, 1941, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 15, 1960. His childhood years were spent in Hartley, where he graduated from Hartley High School. He was united in marriage to Nancy Ruby on July 20, 1963. They were blessed to have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. Three daughters were born to this union. Elmer worked at various jobs before finally settling down at the Hartley Packing House where he spent more than 20 years, mostly in the cold storage department. He enjoyed collecting stagecoaches, fishing, traveling, and was on a bowling league for many years. He had no shortage of interests to fill up his spare time, including working on puzzles, playing cards, paint-by-number, and playing games on the computer. He was an enthusiastic Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed listening to country and “old-time” music. He treasured the times spent with his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Following a long struggle with COPD, Elmer passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa, on Friday, July 22, 2011, at the age of 70. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Esther Nagel, and a grandson, Daniel Paul Wilson. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; three daughters: Tammy Booher and her special friend, Harold Glover of Cherokee, Iowa, Karen and her husband, James Rubsam of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Joann and her husband, Dan Hanen of Hartley; four grandchildren: Joey Booher, Todd Booher, Lucas Booher, and Shana (Kyle) Brouwer; six great-grandchildren: Jayden, Desirea, Kalei, Cameron, Tyler, and Brayden; five sisters: Ruth Meehlhause, Luella Frick, Dalorus (Wilfred) Gaudian, Naoma Schoof, and Lois (Larry) Klatt.
