Harriet Anna Wilhelmine (Schmeling) Meyer was the first born child of Harry and Marie (Schroeder) Schmeling. She was born December 3, 1927, in Fairville, Iowa, and baptized into the Lutheran faith in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fenton, Iowa. The family moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa when Harriet was two. She attended elementary school there and was confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on November 30, 1941. In 1942, the family moved to Whittemore, Iowa, where she attended high school, and graduated May 15, 1945, as valedictorian of her class. On September 4, 1949, Harriet married Dean Meyer in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Whittemore. They lived in several communities, including Whittemore, Lake Crystal, Minnesota, Ralston, Nebraska, Paullina, Iowa, and finally Hartley, Iowa. Harriet was an active church member in all the communities in which they lived, serving as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, VBS teacher, choir member, and held offices in the ladies’ organizations. She also served as a Cub Scout Den leader. She taught country school in Palo Alto County, and kindergarten at Zion Lutheran School in Paullina. At St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley, Harriet belonged to the Friendly Circle, Ladies Aid and LWML, and was St. Paul’s representative for over 15 years. .She was very active in St. Luke’s Auxiliary in Spencer, IA, holding executive offices for many years. Her special interests included reading, quilting, crocheting and counted cross-stitch, traveling and writing. She was recognized and published for her poetry in Lyrical Iowa’s poetry contest. Harriet passed away at her home in Hartley on Friday, May 27, 2011, at the age of 83. She is survived by her husband and six children and their spouses: Lynn (Annette) of Nixa, MO, Pamela (Ronald) Claussen of Lakewood, CO, Clark of Amsterdam, NY, Renee of Highlands Ranch, CO, Denise (Michael) Krohn of Littleton, CO and Scott (Lisa) of Strawberry Point, IA; 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; four brothers: Carroll, Alvin, Dean and Craig; and one sister, Marilyn: several nieces and nephews. Her parents, a brother, Wilferd and a sister-in-law, Elaine preceded her in death. In loving memory of Harriet A.
