Obituary of Merlyn Schoelerman

Merlyn Rae Schoelerman, the son of Alfred and Eva (Baumeister) Schoelerman, was born on a farm east of Hartley, on July 10, 1933. He attended school in the Hartley area and graduated from Hartley High School in 1951. Merlyn was drafted into the United States Army on April 7, 1953 and served as an Army Engineer in the Korean War until March 9, 1955. On January 22, 1956 he was united in marriage to Donna Tesch at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. To this union two children were born, a son Randy and a daughter Ronda. Together the couple farmed in the Hartley area for many years. Donna passed away on December 13, 1995. He married Karmen Noonan on February 22, 1997 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hartley. The couple made their home on a farm north of Hartley. Merlyn enjoyed farming alongside his son Randy for many years. Merlyn passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the age of 77 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, IA. Merlyn was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling. Spending time with his family was important to Merlyn, especially with his grandsons. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ were he served on the consistory and church property committee. He served on the Farmers Co-op Board of Directors during the building of the elevator. Merlyn was also a Trustee for Center Township and was an active member of the American Legion and helped with bingo. He is survived by his wife: Karmen, of May City, IA; a daughter: Ronda (Robert) Hartje of Storm Lake, IA; three grandsons: Matthew (Megan) Sease of Ankeny, IA, Paul Sease of West Des Moines, IA, and Andy Sease of Brookings, SD; a brother: Fred (Bonnie) Schoelerman of Hartley, IA; a step-son Jim (Joye) Noonan of Bondurant, IA, four step-daughters: Jean (John) Landsverk of Denver, CO, Julie Noonan (Ted Abariotes) of Golden, CO, Patty (Dana) Andersen of Glenwood Springs, CO, and Erin Noonan (Clark McGuire significant other )of Iowa City, IA; six step- grandchildren: Jenae, Jacob and Jessica Noonan of Bondurant, IA, Connor Landsverk of Denver, CO, Max and Alex Abariotes of Golden, CO, many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Donna, a son Randy, and an infant sister, Lois. Celebrating the life of Merlyn R.
