Carol Joyce (Vogel)Leth, the daughter of Kryn and Hilda (Janssen) Vogel, was born in Sanborn, Iowa on November 16, 1940. She spent her childhood years in Sheldon, Iowa, attended Sheldon Christian School and graduated from Sheldon High School. On October 26, 1965, she was united in marriage to Richard Leth at her parents’ home in Sheldon. They soon moved to California where Richard served in the US Navy. Three years later they returned to Iowa and made their home in Hartley. They were blessed with five children: Ric, Rhonda, Renee, Rita and Roger. In addition to taking care of her home and family, Carol worked at two local restaurants, Red’s Café and the VIP Lounge. She later worked at the Community Memorial Hospital and Health Center, then retired in 2002 due to health reasons. Carol moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa, in May of this year, and passed away there on Thursday, November 18, 2010, just two days past her 70th birthday. Entering Carol’s house, one would soon be aware of the fact that she loved chickens. She added to her collection whenever she could. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and sports. She especially loved spending time with her grandkids and hearing about their many activities. She had been a member of the Hartley Ambulance Team, and was a member of the Hartley United Methodist Church. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Kryn and Hilda Vogel, by Rich’s parents, Albert “Slats” and Dolly Leth, her sister, Glenda Boone, and three brothers-in-law, John “Jack” Brehmer, Alvin Steffens, and Terry Leth. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 45 years, Richard, her children and their families: Ric Leth and special friend Sherry Tippy of Hartley, Rhonda Petitt of Hartley, Renee and her husband Bill Sterler of Sanborn, Rita Leth and special friend Steve Wetrich, and Roger Leth and his wife Jennifer, all of Hartley; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mavis Vogel of Seattle, WA; other relatives and friends.
