Obituary of Pearl Hofman

Memorial Tribute Pearl (DeVries) Hofman, the daughter of Gerrit and Jessie (Dykstra) DeVries, was born in Sanborn, Iowa on November 8, 1921. Her childhood years were spent in Sanborn, and she was educated in the Sanborn Christian School. On October 13, 1940, Pearl was united in marriage to Dick Hofman. They farmed near Melvin and Sanborn for many years. The Lord blessed them with six children: Kathleen (Kay), Gordon, Arlen, David, Jason and Nancy. Pearl was a good helpmate to her husband, working along side him on the farm. She was a hard worker and enjoyed helping others. She loved being outside. She was a good Christian mother, always encouraging her children. Dick passed away in 1994. Pearl continued to live at home in Sanborn until December of 2008 when she became a resident at the Prairie View Campus in Sanborn; first in the Assisted Living facility, and eventually moved into the Alzheimer’s and Nursing Home wings. Following surgery to repair a broken hip, Pearl left this life on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. She was 88. She was a member of the Cornerstone United Reformed Church where she belonged to the church ladies’ Bible study. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and going for walks. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very precious to her. Left to cherish her memory are her children and their families: Kay and Rev. Jay Wesseling of Sheldon, IA, Gordon and Rachel Hofman of Milwaukee, WI, Arlen and Mary Hofman of Sanborn, Dave and Vonnie Hofman of Primghar, IA, Jason and Lynda Hofman of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Nancy and John Gosselink of Pella, IA; 16 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, Dick, her sisters, Theresa Haagsma and Bessie Van Dyke, and a son-in-law, Henry Bousema.
