Obituary of Marvin Brockshus

Marvin Otto Brockshus the son of Henry & Dorthea (Boernsen) Brockshus was born on February 16, 1920 on the family farm near Ocheyedan, Iowa. He attended school at St. John’s Lutheran Parochial School as well as country school. While growing up Marvin was active in 4-H and loved Rural Youth. On February 18, 1951 he was united in marriage to Alice Newquist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in May City, IA. To this union three sons were born: Robert, Allen and Larry. Together the couple were engaged in farming for 34 years West of May City. Before retiring, he spent several years farming in partnership with his son, Allen. Marvin sold seed corn and was a member of the Hereford Cattle Association for many years. Marvin was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of May City, where he taught a youth Bible Class, and held many positions on the Voters Assembly. He was an active member of the Walther League and Layman Leagues. In addition, Marvin enjoyed many days at Camp Okoboji working to improve camp facilities. Marvin and Alice enjoyed traveling and visiting their son Larry at his different Air Force assignments. In early June 2009, Marvin was diagnosed with cancer. He entered the Sibley Nursing & Rehab Center on September 25, 2009 and passed away there on November 6, 2009 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife, Alice, of 58 years; two sons: Allen Brockshus, his wife, Penny, and step grandson, Austin Folson of Spirit lake, IA, and Larry Brockshus and his wife, Nancy, of Burnsville, MN; grandchildren: Beth Brockshus of Papillion, NE and Adam Brockshus and his wife, Kristin, and their children, Loren and Nathan of North Las Vegas, NV; one brother: Herbert Brockshus and his wife, Marlene, of Ocheyedan, IA; two sisters: Meta Groff and her husband, Albert, of Hartley, IA and Erna Kooistra of Sheldon, IA; three sisters-in-law: Marge Brockshus of Ocheyedan, IA, Doris Haeckman and her husband Duane, of Ellsworth, MN and Inez Smith of Sanborn, IA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorthea, son Robert, and brothers, John and Vernon A Celebration of Life Marvin O.
