Obituary of Daryle McGranahan

Daryle Franklin McGranahan, son of Frank and Charlotte (Stewart) McGranahan, was born in Altamont, SD, on September 11, 1926. The family moved to Ocheyedan, IA in 1927 where Daryle attended the local country schools. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He married Fern Darlene Dorman at St. John’s Lutheran Church on September 21, 1952. The couple were blessed with two children, a son Gregory and a daughter Pamela. Daryle and Fern made their home in Sanborn their entire married lifetime. Following their marriage Daryle worked as a painting & decorating contractor. Other ventures included running a shoe repair shop and selling popcorn on Saturday nights in Sanborn and at the O’Brien County Fair for many years. In 1964 he opened Daryle’s Decorating Business in the garage next to their house, also adding the Sanborn Laundry Mat when they moved to Main Street. The business operated for 25 years until he retired in 1989. Daryle passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on Friday, October 9, 2009, at age 83. Daryle was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sanborn, the American Legion of Sanborn and the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to hunt, fish, bowl, golf, garden and wood working. Daryle loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He had a passion for music and was a band member of several local dance bands. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years Fern; his children: Greg McGranahan and his wife, Helen, of Custer, SD; Pam Dummett and her husband Mike, of Sanborn, IA; grandchildren: Tyler Dummett and special friend, Amy, and her daughters, Hayley and Carly, all of Cave Creek, AZ, Michele Dummett of Ruston, LA and Tasha Koedam and her husband Jay, of Durango, CO; a sister Orma Jean Wingate of Ocheyedan, IA; two brother-in-laws: Marlow Dorman and his wife Bernice and Kenny Dorman and his wife Mariel all of Sanborn, IA; a sister-in-law: Donna Alons and her husband LeRoy of Washington, NC; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: his twin brother Dwight (at infancy), Earl, John, Vincent, Donald and Robert; and two sisters: Arlene McGranahan and Vera Spiegel.
