Memorial Tribute
Robert Postma, the son of Wilbert and Jennie (Bilsland) Postma, was born on July 18, 1916, on a farm north of Sheldon, Iowa. At the age of 12, he moved with his parents to a farm north of Sanborn, Iowa. He attended school near Matlock and Sanborn. Bob served his country in the United States 5th Army during WWII from 1942 – 1945 with the rank of Corporal T5. He was stationed in North Africa and Italy for three years. He earned six overseas service bars and two bronze battle stars.
On June 13, 1948 he married Doris Chambers at the United Methodist Church in Sanborn. The couple first lived on a farm north of Sanborn, then in 1962, moved to their farm west of Melvin. In 1984 the couple retired and moved into Sanborn. Following a brief illness, Bob passed away at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the age of 92.
He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He was a past Master of the Onyx Masonic Lodge, a member of the Sioux City Consistory, Abu Becker Shrine, and Coral Chapter of the Eastern Star. Bob was a 63-year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Hawaii. For 18 years, he and Doris spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona.
Survivors include his two brothers, Leonard Postma and his wife Shirley, and Howard Postma, and his wife Jamie; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, John Postma and an infant brother Keith Postma, and a sister, Dorothy Dykstra.
