Memorial Tribute
Pierson James Elgersma, the son of Jake and Nellie (Zonnefeld) Elgersma was born on March 3, 1937 in Sanborn, Iowa. During his childhood years, he attended the Sanborn Christian Grade School, and Western Christian High School. He served in the Army National Guard.
He was united in marriage to Betty Smit on January 10, 1961. They lived and farmed in the Sanborn and Sheldon areas, and then retired and moved to Sheldon in 1998.
Pierson was a toy tractor collector. Upon retirement he took up woodworking. He loved to spend his spare time watching sports and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church. Following a brief illness, he passed away at the Avera McKennan University and Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on April 29, 2009. He was 72.
Survivors include his wife Betty; four daughters and their families: Lori and Gary Coulander of Sheldon, Lisa and Randy Wills of Sibley, Tammy and Jim Frick of Ashton, and Roxann Hoogland of Granville, and her friend Blake Jurgensen; four grandchildren: Tyler and Lexi Frick and Trenton and Morgan Hoogland; a sister Marlene (Irv) Woudstra; a brother Jack (Carol) Elgersma; two brothers-in-law, Jim Van Engen and Rudy Jacobsen; and in-laws: Kathleen (Andy) Zylstra, Jim (Jenny) Smit, Fran (Ed) Boer, Jerry (Linda) Smit, Roger (Phyllis) Smit, and Marilyn (Bob) Hoogeboom; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Janice Van Engen and Frances Jacobsen.
