Gladys Opal (Milz) Strampe, the daughter of Jake and Nellie (Jenks) Milz, was born on a farm near Royal, Iowa on August 10, 1910. She grew up in the Hartley area and graduated from Hartley High School in 1929.
She was united in marriage to Marvin Strampe on December 4, 1935. They resided and farmed in Center Township, O’Brien County, Iowa for many years until retiring and moving into Hartley. Marvin passed away on August 25, 1979.
While taking care of her family and her home, Gladys enjoyed all kinds of needlework such as sewing, crocheting and tatting, and quilting. She spent many hours joyfully preparing desserts and baking bread. She liked to spend time in her garden, and always loved to dance. She had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church since 1940. She passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on April 6, 2009 at the age of 98.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Darrell Strampe and his wife, Barbara of De Soto, Kansas; three grandchildren: Steven (Tammy)Strampe of Hermiston, Oregon, Matthew (Susan) Strampe of Austin, Minnesota, and Hope (Joe) Hattesohl of Aliso Viejo, California; seven great-grandchildren; one sister Ione Lubinski of Fridley, Minnesota; other relatives and friends.
