Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Richard Wayne “Dick” Sanders, the son of Susan (Smith) and Dr. James Steele Sanders, was born on a farm near Sutherland, Iowa on August 28, 1919. He grew up on that same farm until the family moved to Sanborn. He graduated from the Sanborn Public High School.
On August 18, 1941, Dick married Fay Norene “Rosie” Rowe in South Sioux City, NE. They were one of three generations in the Sanders family to be married on August 18. They made their home in Sanborn, where Dick operated the Sanders Locker, was owner/operator of the Sanders Motel, and for many years, he and Rosie operated the Princess Theatre; Dick ran the projectors, and Rosie made the popcorn. The couple continued living in Sanborn, and moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in the summer of 2008. Following a brief illness, Dick passed away at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center on Friday, March 13 at the age of 89.
He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, bow hunting, metal detecting and traveling. He entertained people with his musical talents by playing the ukulele, the guitar and the accordion. He was a devoted family man, who cherished the time spent with his family. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Onyx Lodge in Sanborn, and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Rosie of Sanborn; his three children and their families: Rick (Carol) Sanders of Merrill, IA, Greg Sanders of Sheldon, IA, and Lori (Rick) Brinkman of Arnolds Park, IA; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, James Sanders, Jr. of Hayden, ID; other relatives and friends.
