Roger D. Miller, the son of Harry and Emma (Gildemeister) Miller, was born near Melvin, Iowa on January 30, 1926. He grew up in this area and attended the Melvin Consolidated School.
Roger proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, 63rd Infantry in the European Theatre from 1944 until 1946. He received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Medal Stars. During his military services, he was selected to serve on the honor guard for Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and as a member of the honor guard at Gen. George S. Patton’s funeral ceremony.
Roger was united in marriage to Helen Benz on November 14, 1948 at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin. During their married life, they lived in Melvin, Ankeny, and Harlan, and moved to Hartley in 1979. Throughout his working years, Roger worked with John Deere equipment in various sites in Iowa.
His hobbies included fishing and woodworking. He was a member of the Arthur W. Kirchhoff Legion Post #288, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, both in Hartley. He passed away at the Sanford Sheldon Hospital on January 1, 2009, at the age of 82.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters, Mary Miller of Urbana, IL, and Kay and her husband Mark Weston of Atlanta, GA; one brother Rev. Russell Miller and his wife Margaret of Beaver Dam, WI; two sisters, Mavis Wackerbarth of Cedar Falls, IA and Donna and her husband Robert Harms of Spring, TX; a sister-in-law, Wilma Miller of Milton, WI; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Eilene Benz of Sioux Falls; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Verlis, and a brother-in-law and his wife, Russell and Henrietta Benz.
