Doris Carolyn (Kelley) Vezina, the daughter of Carolyn (Scheller) and William Kelley, Sr., was born in Baltimore, MD on August 11, 1915. She spent her early school years in Baltimore. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and Edgewood Academy, both in Madison, WI, and graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee, WI. She then graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin, where she majored in Journalism.While in college she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, Theta Sigma Phi and Sigma Delta Chi. Doris married William R. Vezina, Jr. on July 3, 1937. The couple moved to Hartley, Iowa in 1937 and began their long career as publishers of The Hartley Sentinel. While Bill was called into the Navy from 1944 until 1945, Doris took on the responsibilities of publishing The Sentinel. During her years in Hartley, Doris was very active in local clubs and civic organizations. She had been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley since 1937; during that time she taught Sunday school and belonged to the Dorcas Society. She was a Past President of the Hartley chapter of Friday Club, the Member At Large Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. For many years she was Editor of The Iowa Woman’s Club magazine. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Hartley Community Hospital Auxiliary. Doris was honored by The Iowa Newspaper Association as Master-Editor Publisher in 2000. This was an honor she shared with her husband Bill, and her daughter and son-in-law, Billie and Edward Robinson. Doris and Bill have been making their home at Crestview Acres Nursing Home in Marion, IA since March of 2008 Doris passed away on October 30, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, IA. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Bill; her daughter, Carolyn Kay Wilson of Nocona, TX; her son, Kelley John and his wife Mary of Cedar Rapids; her son-in-law Edward Robinson of Hartley; four granddaughters: Suzanne (Richard) Young of Irmo, SC, Stephanie (Doug) Irvin of Nocona, TX, Lorie (Donald) Benjamin of Hays, KS, and Cassandra Jandreau of Maryland; one grandson, Will Robinson of Hartley, IA; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Billie Suzanne Robinson; an infant grandson, Andrew; son-in-law, James A. Wilson; great-grandson, Dillon Eischeid; Bill’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Rube Vezina; one brother Louis, who died when a young child; her brother and his wife, William and Barbara Kelley, Jr.; her sister and brother-in-law Richard and Carolyn Hines; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Merle and Betty Chambers; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Benjamin and RoseMary Vezina; brother-in-law Arthur John (Jack) Vezina; sister-in-law, Phyllis Vezina; an infant brother-in-law, Dickie.
