Obituary of Leona Mundt

Leona Dorthea Mathilda (Schacht) Mundt, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Mundt) Schacht, was born on August 31, 1909, in Lester, IA. She lived her youth in the Lester, Alvord and Larchwood areas and received her education in Lester. Following her school years, Leona would assist families with newborns in the care of the children and the homes. On March 30, 1932, she was united in marriage, to Albert H. Mundt in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple was blessed with three children: Audrey, Judith and Kenneth. Following their marriage the couple resided in the Larchwood, IA area where the couple was engaged in farming. In 1939, they moved to a farm northwest of Hartley where they continued to farm until retiring in 1967. Following retirement, the couple moved into the town of Hartley. Albert passed away on October, 16, 1989. Leona continued to make her home in Hartley until April of 2004 when she moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Leona passed away at Prairie View on Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at the age of 99. Leona was a loving wife and a devoted mother. She and Albert loved to spend time square dancing, fishing, playing cards with family and friends. Leona loved to garden, read, sew and visit with family and friends. She is survived by her children: Audrey Mayer and her husband,Lyle, of Hartley, IA, Judith Reinke and her husband, Robert, of Onawa, IA, and Kenneth Mundt and his wife, Jill, of Mountain View, MO; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a sister: Loretta Schlumbohm of Alvord, IA; two sisters-in-laws Arlene Schacht of Virginia Beach, VA and Julietta Hornbeck of Cottage Grove, OR; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Leona was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, two grandsons, four brothers, two sisters-in-law, five sisters and their spouses. A Celebration of Life Leona D. M.
