Memorial Tribute
Maeoma Marie (Sloan) Harberts, the daughter of Napoleon and Elizabeth (Cooper) Sloan, was born on December 21, 1911 in Evander, O’Brien County, Iowa.
She grew up in Sanborn, and at the age of 16, graduated valedictorian of the Sanborn High School Class of 1928.
On October 20, 1936, Maeoma married Ralph R. Harberts. The couple lived and raised their twin daughters, Jane and Judith, in Sanborn. Ralph passed away in 1976. Maeoma continued living in Sanborn until 2005 when she moved to Oklahoma to be near her daughter. She returned to Sanborn in 2007, and resided at Prairie View Nursing Home until her death on August 27, 2008.
For many years, Maeoma worked as the telephone operator for the city of Sanborn. She was a quiet, gentle person who enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the St. Cecilia’s ladies’ guild, 20th Century Club, Legion Auxiliary, and had been a long-time chairperson for the Sanborn area March of Dimes campaign.
Survivors include her daughters Jane E. Tonner of Newnan, GA, and Judith G. Soltow and her husband, Allen of Tulsa, OK; her grandchildren and their families: Lisa (Carlos) Navarro, Nico and Sebastian of Basel, Switzerland, Heather (Errol) West, Sophie and Colin of Melbourne, FL, Soeren (Crystal) Soltow, and son Stellan of Tulsa, Ok, and Seth (Shannon) Soltow, Katelyn and Erik, also of Tulsa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, son-in-law Heinrich F. Tonner, and one sister Leona Bird and her husband Jack.
