Memorial Tribute Bessie Cecelia (De Vries) Van Dyke, the daughter of Gerrit and Jessie (Dykstra) De Vries, was born on March 13, 1914 near Hospers, IA. A short time later, the family moved to Sanborn, where Bessie received her education at the Sanborn Christian School. On June 19, 1935 she married Jake Van Dyke at her parents’ farm just east of Sanborn. Jake and Bessie farmed in the Sanborn area until 1966 when they moved into the town of Sanborn. They later lived in Sioux Center for ten years, and then moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. During their retirement, the couple spent many winters at Alamo, TX. In 2006 they moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Throughout her life Bessie enjoyed fishing, traveling, golfing and playing cards. She was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, where, for many years, she participated in the ladies' Bible studies. She loved her Lord. When her eyesight began to fail, she looked forward to having Scriptures read to her. Bessie passed away on April 27, 2008 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center at the age of 94. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Jake, and their four children: Jim and Joy Van Dyke of Sanborn, Gary and Laura Van Dyke of Holland, MI, Jessie and Franklin Vandenberg of Overland Park, KS, and Judi and Eugene Vonk of Ireton, IA; 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; her sister Pearl Hoffman; sisters-in-law Bertha Vander Plaats, Reka Andringa, Anna Talsma, and June Van Dyke; and brother-in-law Marian (Annette) Van Dyke.
