Obituary of Billie Riedemann

Billie Iris (Gathman) Riedemann, the daughter of Alice (Muilenburg) and Bill Gathman, was born on January 3, 1926 in Hartley, Iowa. She was the oldest of ten children and had four brothers and five sisters. Billie attended country school south of Hartley until the eighth grade and went on to graduate from Hartley High School in 1942. After graduation she went to Washington D.C. with some friends and cousins and worked for the F.B.I. while there. On September 1, 1946 she married Irvin Riedemann at Hartley, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple resided on a farm southeast of Hartley where they were engaged in farming for many years. The couple was blessed with four daughters; Stephanie, Deborah, Christine and Paula. Billie managed the fabric store in Hartley for several years. While living on the farm, Billie enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, doing crafts and sewing. Billie moved to the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on August 2, 2005 and died there on April 3, 2008 at the age of 82. In 1990 Irv and Billie were named King and Queen of the Hartley Thresher’s Bee. Billie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Friendly Circle and Ladies Aid. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Billie was a wonderful lady and we will all miss her sweet spirit and gentle dignity. She is survived by her husband, Irvin of Hartley; four children: Stephanie Dittberner of Hamburg, IA, Deborah Rogister of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Christine (Craig) Kolb of Moneta, IA, and Paula (Bill) Herbes of Sparta, NJ; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Lois (Bill) McDowell of Fountain Hills, AZ, Peggy (Orville) Brunk of Canton, SD, Jean (Max) Graves of Mesa, AZ, and Sandy (Bob) Hoffman of Spirit Lake, IA; three brothers: Doug (Marilyn) Gathman of Spirit Lake, IA, Larry (Terri) Gathman of Springfield, MO, and Roger (Lory) Gathman of Hartley; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert Gathman; one sister, Patricia Brigham; and a son-in-law, Bill Rogister.
